The right formation isn't the most fashionable one, it's the one that puts your players in the best conditions. Here's what you need to compare the formations covered in this course.
Each module has already detailed the strengths and weaknesses of its formation. The table below doesn't repeat them: it puts them side by side so you can decide — what each one gives you that the others don't, at what price, and the squad profile where it shines.
| Formation | What it gives you that others don't | The price to pay | Choose it when… |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4-4-2 | The simplest reference points | Only two central midfielders | you're laying foundations and you have two strikers |
| 4-3-3 | Permanent width and a high press | A huge running volume | your wingers are quick and your midfielders run |
| 4-2-3-1 | A free playmaker behind the striker | The lone striker gets isolated fast | you have a creative playmaker to build around |
| 3-5-2 | An extra man when playing out | The space behind the wing-backs | you have two tireless wing-backs |
| 3-4-3 | Three players high up at all times | Only two central midfielders | you want to press high and carry a threat |
| 4-4-2 diamond | Control of the centre of the pitch | No natural width at all | you have no wingers but a real playmaker |
| 4-5-1 | The middle of the pitch locked down | A striker quickly left alone | you're facing a stronger side |
A few questions to ask yourself
- Which players do you have? Two good strikers → a system with two up front. Good quick wingers → more likely a 4-3-3.
- What condition are they in? A system that demands a lot of running isn't ideal if the squad is thin.
- What's the aim for this match? You can adapt to the opponent without changing everything.
Changing formation doesn't fix everything. Often, playing a simple system well beats playing a complicated one badly.
